Girls soccer: Wilton downs Ludlowe for third straight win

In a game in which all the scoring took place in the second half, the Wilton High girls soccer team defeated host Fairfield Ludlowe, 4-1, Tuesday night for its third win in a row.

With one game left in the regular season the Warriors are in seventh place in the conference’s overall standings. The top-eight teams qualify for the FCIAC playoffs.

After a scoreless first half.Wilton (8-3-4) got on the board first with 27:34 to play when Tegan Helms sent her corner kick toward the goal and Jayne Maccio put it in the net for the 1-0 lead.

About six minutes later, Lindsay Knutson gave her team a 2-0 advantage, assisted by Kayla O’Brien.

The Mustangs cut the lead in half to 2-1 with 17:33 left on the clock, but Wilton put the game away with two more scores for the win. Maccio netted her second goal of the night and Helms added a goal of her own.

According to Wilton head coach Megan Rodriguez, Ludlowe came out playing a very physical style, and she was concerned enough for her players' safety to approach the referees.

The Warriors wrap up the regular season this Thursday night at home against Bridgeport Central on Senior Night.
