Cross country: Wilton girls win Class L state title; Brown first at boys' meet

It was an unexpected banner day for the Wilton High cross country teams at the Class L state championships Saturday morning at Wickham Park in East Hartford.

The WHS girls cross country team upset pre-race favorite Darien to win the Class L state championship, while WHS sophomore Spencer Brown won the Class L boys individual title.

The Wilton girls had 83 points to top runner-up Darien (92) by nine points. Darien, the defending Class L champion, had finished second and Wilton fourth at the recent FCIAC championship.

Alex Fiesel led Wilton with a ninth-place overall finish in a time of 20:26 for the 5K (3.1 miles) course.

Two other Warriors were also in the top-15 as Sarah Healy placed 12th (20:29 ) and Alosha Southern was 15th (20:50).

Maddie Murphy (22nd, 21:09) ) and Mary Lynch (25th, 21:16) also contributed toward Wilton's team score.

Fairfield Warde's Cate Allen, the FCIAC champ, won the Class L individual title with a time of 19:36.

Brown, meanwhile, finished first in the Class L boys race with a time of 16:46. He was eight seconds faster than Fairfield Warde's Aidan Fiol (16:54).

Wilton was sixth in the team competition with 157 points.
