The Wilton High girls cross country team opened the season on Tuesday with wins over Staples and Trumbull, claiming five of the top six spots, and six of the top eight, out of a field of 45.

Alex Fiesel led the way as she placed second overall, completing the 4,400-meter course at Staples High School in a time of 18:19.

She was followed by Alosha Southern (third, 18:37), Keiley Gaston (fourth, 18:55), ; Sarah Healy, (fifth, 18:58), Casey Chase (sixth, 19:00) and Maddie Murphy (eighth, 19:10).

The Warriors beat Staples by a score of 20-39, and Trumbull by a score of 15-45.

Hannah DeBalsi of Staples won the race in a time of 18:06.

The Wilton boys team beat Trinity Catholic, 15-50, but lost to Staples (23-37) and Trumbull (26-31).

Spencer Brown placed second overall in a time of 16:38 for the 5K course. Matt Caswell was third in 17:32.

Rounding out Wilton’s top seven were Spencer Taylor (13th, 18:23), Owen Mellin (17th, 18:53), Derek Stang (22nd, 19:29), Kris Langholm (24th, 19:32) and David Hernandez (25th, 19:34).

Henry Wynne of Staples won the race in a time of 16:27.
