Boys lacrosse: Warriors fall to Rams on late goal

Graham Braden’s goal with 11.7 seconds left gave the New Canaan boys lacrosse team a dramatic 9-8 victory over Wilton on Wednesday at New Canaan’s Dunning Field.

The Warriors (1-1) had just tied the game on a goal by Liam Rance with 42 seconds left. Nick Crovatto won the ensuring faceoff for the Rams, leading to the winning goal.

Quintin O’Connell led New Canaan with three goals and and one assist, and Ryan O’Connell had a goal and two assists.

For Wilton Kieran McGovern had the hot hand with four goals, while Rance scored two goals and Connor Drake and Brian Calabrese each had a goal and two assists.

Andrew Calabrese made 12 saves in goal for Wilton.

The Warriors had a 2-0 lead in the first three minutes, but the Rams came back with three straight goals to take their first lead at 3-2. Calabrese then knotted the score at 3-3 after one quarter.

Ryan O’Connell set up Quintin O’Connell for New Canaan’s fourth goal at 4:23 of the second quarter, and McGovern tied it 29.1 seconds before halftime.

Each team scored three times in the third quarter, keeping the score tied at 7-7 and setting up a tense fourth quarter.

Quintin O’Connell gave the Rams an 8-7 edge with 2:26 remaining, before Rance tied the score when he scored top shelf with 42.6 seconds on the clock.
