The Wilton American Legion Post 86 Junior (17-U) baseball team opens the state tournament today with a game at 5:30 at top-seeded Cheshire.

Wilton (10-14) earned the sixth and final berth from Zone 4 thanks to a 5-2 win at Greenwich on Saturday, a forfeit win over Westport, and a pair of losses by Darien/New Canaan.

Win or lose today, 16th-seeded Post 86 will play on Wednesday at either Oakville or North Haven.

Ben Olson got the win at Greenwich, going three and one-third innings and allowing two runs on six hits and one walk. Brendan Connors threw two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief, allowing just a hit and walk, with two strikeouts. Jordan Sayewitz closed out the game in the final inning, allowing no runs and no hits, with one walk and one strikeout.

Wilton had only three hits, but took advantage of seven Greenwich errors, which resulted in three of the five runs being unearned.

Wilton scored three runs in the top of the second, with the first batters, Connor and Will Holmquist, hit by pitches. A single by Regan Kahal loaded the bases with one out. Connor scored on an error on Patrick Cummins’s grounder, and Kahal came in an a walk to Daniel Ielusic. The third run (Cummins) came on an error on Roman Scavone’s grounder.

Post 86 added a run in the third when Sayewitz walked with two outs, went to second on a errant pickoff throw, and scored on an error on Kahal’s grounder.

Wilton’s final run came in the fifth, as Holmquist singled, moved to second on a walk by Sayewitz, and scored on an RBI single by Kahal.
