A Pizza and Beer Blast — a benefit for the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation — begins at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 30, at the Wilton Riding Club on Riding Club Road. The event is hosted by Cathy Parese and Tricia Hartner, both lung cancer survivors from Wilton. “There are so many people who are not aware that lung cancer takes more lives every year than breast, prostate and colon cancers combined” the two women say. “It is the second-leading cause of death in all adults in the U.S., and kills more women than any other cancer.” The women say that in addition to raising money for a good cause, they want to increase awareness “of the dismal statistics of lung cancer and help diminish the stigma the disease has.” The women point out that anyone can get lung cancer. “Of the 228,000 diagnosed each year 17.9% are never smokers and 60% are former smoker, who quit over 10 years ago,” they said. “It has the worst survival rates (15.5%) and is the least-funded cancer in terms of research dollars per death of all the major cancers. We are both extremely lucky, we were diagnosed early, but many are not so lucky. Screening protocols did not exist a little as two years ago. “We want our fundraising to go the foundation’s main mission: increasing survival rates.” The Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation (ALCF) is one of the largest patient-driven philanthropies nationwide devoted exclusively to eradicating lung cancer through research, awareness, education, early detection and treatment. Since its founding as a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization in California in 2006, the foundation has raised more than $10 million for lung cancer research, patient services and awareness.
