Vernal pools are unusual but vital components of the local ecosystem, providing a safe habitat where amphibians are born and live the early part of their lives. There will be a free guided walk to visit vernal pools at Woodcock Nature Center on Saturday, April 15, at 10 a.m. Woodcock\u2019s executive director, Mike Rubbo, and Dave Havens, a science teacher and vice president of the Norwalk River Watershed Association, will begin with a short introduction on amphibians and how to find them followed by a walk along the trails to visit these ephemeral ponds sheltering salamanders, newts, frogs and toads. Meet at the trailhead parking lot at 56 Deer Run Road. Tall, waterproof boots are suggested. All ages are welcome. Register at woodcocknaturecenter.org. For those who wish to learn more, Rubbo will give a talk on vernal pools Tuesday, April 11, 7 p.m., at Ridgefield Library on Main Street in Ridgefield. Register at ridgefieldlibrary.org.
