The Wilton Garden Club\u2019s stunning flower show, Art in Bloom, that it presented in October 2017, has won the highest award in the nation for flower show excellence. An extra-large rosette ribbon, along with a certificate of merit, was presented to club members at the Annual Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut Awards Meetindesg on Oct. 24, at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville. More than 80 state, regional and national awards were presented. The club also received two other national awards: a certificate of appreciation for membership\/promotion and website, and a certificate of appreciation for youth environmental education. A New England Garden Clubs award was presented for best horticultural division in a standard flower show \u2014 Art in Bloom. Art in Bloom was the highest-scoring standard flower show in the state, which resulted in the Wilton Garden Club receiving an engraved pewter bowl and certificate of merit. Over the course Oct. 13-14, 2017, historic Old Town Hall was transformed into a floral fantasy as the Wilton Garden Club presented Art in Bloom, a show that combined art and flowers. Outdoors there were an autumnal display in the historic grotto garden, fairy gardens, garden crafts, and hanging displays inspired by a kinetic sculpture. Inside, the hall was a riot of color and texture, filled with flowers and displays that celebrated creative expressions through art and floral design. Twenty-eight floral designs, inspired by fine art from seven local artists, were a highlight of the show. More than 260 people attended the show, spearheaded by club member Nan Merolla. \u201cThe club does flower shows to share our love of gardening and floral design with the community,\u201d Merolla said after the awards presentation. \u201cWe are so very grateful for our sponsors and the community who attended \u2014 we want to share this good news with them.\u201d Other awards Garden club president Suzanne Knutson received a certificate of individual achievement for \u201cher dedication to her community\u2019s beautification and her excellence in overseeing the plethora of civics projects that her club takes part in each year,\u201d a press release said. Club member Bobbi Kahan received an award for her work on monthly garden therapy programs at the Wilton Senior Center. The club\u2019s website won a certificate of merit for public relations and communications. In addition to its award for youth environmental education at Art in Bloom, the club was honored for its \u201coutstanding work with a youth group in a school setting or with other youth groups.\u201d In addition to working for 25 weeks with middle school students in the Green Teens gardening program at Trackside Teen Center, club members also worked with Boy Scouts on their Gardening Merit Badge program and with the Girl Scouts, who created and displayed 22 fairy gardens at the flower show.
