Wilton Playshop presents ‘That Championship Season’

The Wilton Playshop will present staged readings of Jason Miller’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, That Championship Season, on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 12-13, at 8.   Director Will Jeffries has assembled a team of local talent, including Mike Limone as Phil, Jeremy Funke as Tom, Eric Dino as James, and Tom Petrone as George. Mr. Jeffries will also be playing the role of Coach. Julie Thaxter-Gourlay is featured as the narrator of the reading.

“Mr. Jeffries has worked with all of the actors in the past — either directing or acting alongside them — and was looking to gather the five to work on a project,” a press release from the Playshop said. “To him, this play seemed to be a perfect fit.”

The Playshop’s Board of Directors agreed and chose to produce the staged readings as a special benefit to open the 77th season.

That Championship Season is the story of a retired high school football coach and the four players he guided to a state championship 20 years earlier. Their annual reunion reveals their present lives have spiraled far from their glory days.

One former player is the inept mayor of the town facing a strong challenge for re-election. Another, the frustrated principal of the local high school, is his ambitious campaign manager. A third is a successful but destructive businessman who vacillates in his financial support of the mayor. The fourth is a witty, but despairing alcoholic.

“An overwhelming critical and popular success, this brilliant, powerful play brings pathos, humor and deep compassion to its penetrating study of four former teammates and their coach.”

Tickets are $25. They may be purchased online at wiltonplayshop.org, or by calling the box office at 203-762-7629.
