Wilton Class Project 2019 launches Feb. 4

Parents of current seventh graders are invited to attend the orientation meetings for the Wilton Class Project 2019 on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at Trackside Teen Center.

Parents may attend one of two meetings — 10:30 a.m. or 7 p.m. — to learn about the Class Project Program and how they can get involved and begin making plans to launch the six-year program for the Class of 2019.

Over the past 30 years Wilton Class Projects have brought parents together to meet, network and support one another in effectively dealing with adolescent issues, and provide alcohol- and drug-free events for students.

“The Wilton Class Project program was started locally in 1982, for the Class of 1988, under the Wilton Youth Action Council,” said Shawn Kahal, class project coordinator for the Wilton Youth Council and chair of Project 2015.

“A fatal accident that happened in Ridgefield on the night of graduation prompted the parents of that class to act.”

Since 1987, the Wilton Youth Council has sponsored Wilton Class Projects, and each new project is set up during the second semester of students’ seventh grade year.

“A steering committee is formed and they begin planning the project, [which] is open to every Wilton student and their family, regardless of their choice to be in public or private school,” said Ms. Kahal.

Over the next four years, the steering committee organizes parent socials and safe, substance-free, student-driven opportunities for social and service-oriented projects.

“During the course of these four years the various events have a fund-raising element,” said Ms. Kahal.

“At the end of junior year, these funds are then handed over to the Post Graduation Party steering committee.”

The Post Graduation Party is the culmination of the five-and-a-half-year project.

“It offers graduates a drug- and alcohol-free, all-night event where they get to be with all of their classmates for one last time before college,” said Ms. Kahal.

The snow date is Wednesday, Feb. 5, at the same times at Trackside, 15 Station Road.
