Summerstage musical opens July 10

Wilton Children’s Theater Summerstage production of Once Upon A Mattress will be performed on Thursday and Friday, July 10 and 11, at 7:30 p.m. at The Clune Center for the Performing Arts, at the high school campus on Danbury Road.

Directed by Mary Jo Duffy, this is a musical retelling of “The Princess and the Pea,” based on the hit Broadway stage show. “When she advertises for a princess to marry her romantically challenged son, Queen Aggravain never expects to get an applicant like Princess “Fred,” a girl who swears she’s shy and is anything but,” the organization in an email to The Bulletin.

Tickets may be purchased online at wiltonchildrenstheater.org or on the day of each show.

Ms. Duffy has been directing musicals at various public and private schools in Connecticut for the past eight years. She is also a founder and owner of Wiremill Academy in Wilton where she teaches musical theater, drama, and private voice.

Summerstage is the Children’s Theater’s three-week musical theater workshop for Wilton students entering the seventh through 10th grades.

“Students are directed by a seasoned professionals and supported by local emerging professionals who lead them through the process of theater production,” according to the WCT website. “The Summerstage cast explores the process of putting on a show, from acting to set painting, culminating with two performances.”

The young cast members have been rehearsing at the Trackside teen center.
