How to let up on helicopter parenting
Wilton Youth Council will present a screening of Julie Lythcott-Haims’ TED Talk on parental expectations and unconditional love Wednesday, Jan. 24, 7-8:30 p.m., at Wilton Library. The video will be followed by a discussion led by Tracey Masella of Silver Hill Hospital. The program is appropriate for parents of children of all ages.
Lythcott-Haims is a former dean at Stanford University who speaks and writes about the risks of helicopter parenting. Masella will discuss how to stop over-parenting and help children develop resilience. Resilience is the ability to manage adversity, to pick ourselves up after we have fallen down.
“In our communities, children are often rescued before they fall; our children are deprived of the opportunity to learn how to handle distress,” a press release from the youth council said. “We will discuss how to create a safe and effective family frame in which children learn to manage their lives effectively.”
Registration is recommended: www.wiltonlibrary.org or 203-762-6334.
The program will also be presented earlier in the day from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Weston Library. To register for this program, visit www.westonpubliclibrary.org, click on Calendar.
