Choirs present a ‘shining’ Advent concert

The Music Ministry of Our Lady of Fatima Church will present its annual Advent Concert, Sunday, Dec. 14, 3:30, at the Villa Notre Dame Chapel, 345 Belden Hill Road.

The centerpiece of the hour-long, family-friendly concert, will be the Christmas Cantata “On This Shining Night,” by Lee Dengler and Susan Naus Dengler. Scored for choir, instruments, and congregation, the work carries the theme of light.

The children’s choir opens the concert with “On This Shining Night,” followed by the entrance of the 23-voice adult choir singing an arrangement of “O Holy Night.” Fresh, jubilant renderings of traditional and familiar carols including “Joy to the World,” “O Come, All Ye Faithful” and “Rise Up, Shepherd” are interwoven with new music and lyrics.

Narrators Thomas Dehn and Stephen Pasierb provide context for each movement with scripture passages and commentary.

The choir will also offer a capella arrangements of “Go, Tell it On the Mountain” and the English favorite, “Sussex Carol,” and lead the congregation in sing-along carols.

The children’s choir will also perform holiday songs under the direction of Betsy McGowan.

Our Lady of Fatima Pastor, Father Reggie Norman, will lead an opening prayer as the choir begins its traditional processional, “O Come, O Come Emmanuel.”

Mary Bozzuti Higgins will conduct the ensembles, accompanied by Clay Zambo, Our Lady of Fatima music director, and frequent church collaborator and New York composer/pianist, Scott Ethier.
