Senior Center News: May 8

Would you like to feel more peaceful, relax completely, and learn how to tame your “monkey mind?”  Denise O’Hearn will offer a yoga workshop to help you will explore the power of the mind and how it affects our daily lives. You will learn the basics of meditation and rest deeply in restorative yoga postures. No yoga experience is necessary.

The first one is Tuesday, May 20, 10:45; $20 per workshop. Space is limited.  Reserve your place at 203-834-6240.

Comstock renovation

The renovation of Comstock Community Center is one of the capital projects before voters in this spring’s budget vote. The primary goal is to extend the useful life of this community facility and town asset for another 20 years.

The building is home to the Wilton Senior Center, Wilton Food Pantry, Parks and Recreation Department and Department of Social Services. It also serves as the town’s emergency shelter.

The Adjourned Town Meeting vote will take place this Saturday, May 10, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Wilton High School’s Clune Center. Dial-A-Ride is available. Call 203-834-6235 to reserve a ride. Brochures and displays are available at the senior center.

Computer courses

There are two computer courses scheduled for May:

  • Basic Word on May 12 and 13; taught by Andrea Ragusa. Fee: $30.
  • Picasa Photo Workshop on May 20, taught by Bill Brautigam; May 20. Fee:  $20.

Students for Seniors

If you have an electronic device but don’t know how to use, it, there are students who can help. Wilton High School Junior Neal Sarup and members of Students for Seniors can offer one-on-one assistance to help you navigate these devices. Get individual attention. Call Neal at 203-762-7751 to set up a time to meet at the senior center.

Latin moves

Enjoy dancing? Come and learn some “Latin moves” with instructor Beatriz Araujo. This four-week dance-a-thon will get you up and moving to the Latin beat. The class meets from 11:45 to 12:30 on Mondays, June 2, 9, 16, and 23.  No partner is necessary. Fee for all four classes: $25. Class size limited.  Register at 203-834-6240.


Coming in June is a course that covers a variety of basic drawing techniques related to producing a realistic sketch involving basic shapes, shadows, shading, perspective, and composition. The sessions are designed for those who have had no drawing experience or who would like to brush up on their sketching skills.

The class will meet from 10 to noon on Tuesdays, June 3 to July 8. Fee for six-week session: $50. Initial materials are included in this fee and will be waiting for you on June 3. Class size limited. Registration required; call 203-834-6240.

Head to Beantown 

Parks and Recreation offers a Trip on Your Own to Boston, Sunday, May 18.

Let us drive you to Boston where you can sightsee and shop at your own pace. Depart from Comstock at 7 a.m. Wilton resident, $25; Non-resident, $35.


There are a limited number of free senior citizen tickets for the Saturday, May 17, matinee performance of Oklahoma! at 4, at the Clune Center. Call 203-834-6240 to reserve tickets. Dial-a-ride is available.

A stitch throughout time 

The Wilton Historical Society presents “Teaching a New Generation How to Stitch” on Saturday, May 31 and June 14, from 2 to 3:30.

Members of the Fairfield County chapter of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America will help students finish a project during the two classes. Students will be given a certificate of completion. Call the historical society at 203-762-7257 to register.  This program is sponsored by the Christine Dartley Memorial Fund.
