Pools keep the summer vibe all year long

For many New Englanders, our love affair with pool parties, moonlight swims and invigorating laps ultimately gets put on hold until the long-awaited return of an all too short summer. A vacation to warmer climes may help fill the gap, but soon it is back to winter and indoor hibernation. But for those with the rare luxury of having an indoor pool, it’s game on for summer fun no matter what the weather or season.

Such was the motivation for the owners of 47 Golden Hill Lane in Shelton, a custom colonial with a stunning indoor pool with waterfall and wraparound indoor patio with plenty of space for entertaining offering resort-style living all year long.

“We would always relocate to our lake house for the summer and move back here in September,” the owner said.

“One day, when my wife was swimming in my mother’s pool next door, I had the idea to build a pool that we could use the whole winter,” he explained.

Thus, began the construction of a custom indoor pool, designed to feel as if it were outside. Stone from the property was incorporated into the patio and waterfall, and the vaulted ceiling with multiple skylights was finished in handsome woodwork. A two-story wall of windows connects the space to the outdoors, with sliders to the exterior wraparound deck.

“When there is snow on the deck, swimming in the pool or enjoying a glass of wine in the hot tub makes it all worth it. Every swim was part of a stay-at-home vacation, no matter what the weather or day would bring us.”

French doors connect the pool area to the family room as well as to the gourmet kitchen. The 7,389 square foot home is set on just under four acres in White Hills and is adjacent to Birchbank Mountain. It is offered at $939,000 through Jennifer Lombard of Coldwell Banker.

In Fairfield’s Greenfield Hills, the focal point of the four-acre compound on Governor’s Lane is the grand 1,900 square-foot indoor pool pavilion that encompasses a chlorine-free pool, indoor patio, kitchenette, dining or billiards area, skylight and walls of glass to the marble patio. Showers, baths, a steam room and gym area are all accessible from the pavilion.

“The swim parties were endless, all year long,” said the owner. “Having an indoor pool created so many opportunities for daily exercise and play. And the fantastic views in every season makes it feel like you are part of the outdoors — rain, sun or snow.”

The glamorous 6,347 square-foot neoclassical home also features a lighted sport court, five en suite bedrooms, gourmet kitchen, media room with bar, wine cellar and guest cottage. It is offered at $1.975 million through Carol Langeland of William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty.
