Southbury man charged with negligent homicide in fatal November crash
SOUTHBURY — A local man was arrested Tuesday in connection with a fatal head-on crash last year on Old Waterbury Road.
Thomas Sherk, 79, was charged with negligent homicide and improper turn after turning himself in on a warrant stemming from the Nov. 8 crash that killed 66-year-old Southbury resident Elizabeth Ballard.
Southbury first responders were called that day to the area of 380 Old Waterbury Road at 5:17 p.m. for a head-on collision with injuries.
First responders got to the scene in less than 3 minutes and found two damaged vehicles — a 2003 Toyota RAV4 and 2012 Nissan Frontier.
Police said Sherk tried to make a left turn into the driveway of the Greenhouse Condominiums from the westbound side of Old Waterbury Road and crashed into the eastbound 2003 Toyota RAV4 driven by Ballard.
Sherk went to Saint Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury with injuries, while Ballard was transported to Danbury Hospital and later pronounced dead.
After being processed at Southbury police headquarters, Sherk was released on $500 nonsurety bond.
He is scheduled to appear at state Superior Court in Waterbury on Nov. 18.
