Dr. Michael C. Niekrash died suddenly at his home in West Hartford on June 27, 2016 at the age of 90. He was born in Hartford, the son of Konstanty Niekrash and Natalie (Lewgowd) Niekrash, attended Hartford public schools, the University of Connecticut, and earned his DDS degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. After serving in the Air Force during the Korean War, he practiced general dentistry in Hartford for more than 50 years. Niekrash loved his family, his profession and his country. He remained extremely active with dental professional societies throughout his life, serving as president of the Hartford Dental Society, the New England Dental Society and the Horace Wells Club. He published \u00a0a book, A History of the Connecticut State Dental Association, in 1976 while serving as the association\u2019s historian, a position he held for 24 years. A trustee of the McManus Fund of the Hartford Dental Society for more than 25 years, he was instrumental in establishing the Hartford Dental Society SmileMobile program in the 1970s, which still operates today to improve dental health for schoolchildren in Hartford. Niekrash leaves his wife of 68 years, Rita (Kosciusko), and their four children and spouses: Michael (Regina) from Madison, Conn., Christine (Bruce Koeppen) from Guilford, Conn., John (Deborah) from Mystic, Conn., and Nancy (William Budd) from Wilton, Conn.; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. His memorial service will be held on Monday, July 18, at 10:30 at the Church of Saint Timothy, 1116 North Main Street, West Hartford.
