Daniel Robert Johnson, a 31-year resident of Redding, formerly of Wilton, died unexpectedly at home on November 1. Son of the late Oren and Mason Johnson, he was born in Detroit, Mich., on May 28, 1938. Dan graduated from The University of Michigan and The University of Michigan Law School. He began his legal career at Proctor and Gamble, in Cincinnati, followed by Miles Laboratory, in Elkhart, Ind. He also served as the chief legal counsel of Hoechst Corp. before joining Combe, Inc, in White Plains, N.Y., as General Counsel, in 1977, a position he held for 37 years until his retirement in 2014. He served on the board as well as chairing the legal committees of the U.S. industry associations: Personal Care Products Council and the Consumer Healthcare Products Association. With quiet, unwavering strength he supported his family through the difficult moments in life, a pillar of stability. He taught, through his own example, generosity, integrity, modesty, charitableness and unfailing politeness. Even-tempered and unassuming, Dan never shed his Midwestern sensibilities or lost touch with those roots. While naturally reserved and humble, he delighted in sharing stories, spending time with his grandchildren, reciting poetry or, with rosy cheeks and a wry smile, delivering the inevitable pun. He had a lifelong curiosity and love of learning, and instilled in others his passion for classical music, cooking and travel. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Karen; his son, Mark Johnson; daughter, Karen Orphanos; his stepchildren, Courtney Roy, Cynthia Roy, and Chip Roy; his sister, Barbara Wright; and three grandchildren and four step-grandchildren. A private family service will be held on November 13. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dan\u2019s memory may be made to Regional Hospice and Home Care, 30 Milestone Road, Danbury, CT 06810.
