Robert Arthur Butler, 76

Robert Arthur Butler, 76, of Wilton, CT, passed away on February 16, 2014 due to complications from pneumonia. Robert was born in Framingham, MA on December 10, 1937. The son of Ralph and Evelyn Boyd Butler, Robert affectionately went by Bob with his family and friends.

Bob graduated from Strong Vincent High School in Erie, PA. He then went on to graduate from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University in 1959. In 1962 he graduated from the University of Michigan Law School where he was a member of The Michigan Law Review.

After law school, Bob became an associate at the Shearman and Sterling law firm in New York City. He then went on to work at the Union Carbide Corporation where he retired as Chief Litigation Counsel in 2001.

Bob was married to Elizabeth Hodge Butler, his loving and devoted wife, in 1966 in Watertown, NY. Bob and Liz met in New York City and lived there and in Stamford, CT before moving to Wilton where they raised their children and have resided since 1972.

Bob was a man of many talents and interests. He was a long-time member of the Wolfpit Running Club in Ridgefield, CT where he trained and ran many local road races and marathons. He later became an avid cyclist participating in the Sound Cyclists Bicycle Club and racing in the Tour de Greenwich. One of Bob’s greatest passions was skiing. He loved to ski with his family and friends, and in later years he raced and trained with the New England Masters ski group. Bob was very interested in plants and trees and spent many hours gardening at his home in Wilton. He was an active member of Wilton Kiwanis. An avid reader, Bob had great interest in Shakespeare whose work he studied with friends at Norwalk Community College. Bob and Liz have been long-time members of the Wilton Presbyterian Church where Bob was an active volunteer and governing member.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Elizabeth Hodge Butler; his sister, Connie Amick of Ann Arbor, Michigan; and three children: Christopher Butler and his wife Lauren of Forest Hills, NY; Deborah Butler and her husband Matthew Collett of Wayland, MA; Jennifer Butler and her husband Reshan Richards of Nutley, NJ. Additionally he is survived by six cherished grandchildren: Audrey and Ian Butler, Katelyn and William Collett, and Grayson and Finley Richards.
