Obituary: Herbert F. Roome, 88

Herbert F. Roome of 101 Glen Hill Road, Wilton, died on July 30, 2013 at Norwalk Hospital. He was a Wilton resident since 1967.  Born February 9, 1925, in Valley Stream, N.Y., son of the late Edna and Roy Roome. He was predeceased by the late Marilyn W. Roome, his first wife of 51 years who passed away in 1998. He is survived by his wife, Phoebe Lou, and his three daughters, Kathleen R. Ullrich, Melinda S. R. Mears, and Elizabeth W. R. Joy, as well as ten beloved grandchildren, Christina, Robert, Bradley, Jennifer, Amanda, Weston, Austin, Ross, Alden and Meredith and three great granddaughters, Abbie, Abigail and Eden.

He served in the European Theatre during WWII and in the Army Reserve until his retirement as Captain, Infantry, USAR. He graduated from Union College in Schenectady, NY in 1952. His entire business career was in the computer/communications field. For five years, Herb was an Adjunct Professor at American University in Washington, D.C. After retiring from McGraw-Hill in December 1990, he was retained as a consultant. Herb also served as the Assistant Animal Control Officer in Wilton for many years.

Herb’s past activities included tutoring for the Literacy Volunteers of Fairfield County, Town Meeting Member (Reading, MA), Director of the National Payphone Association, Church School Teacher and Youth Group Leader, Meals on Wheels volunteer, Reserve Officer’s Association and President of Ring #97 International

Brotherhood of Magicians. He was also a member of the Wilton Historical Society involved in instituting the annual “Great Trains” exhibit started in 1998. He enjoyed woodworking , sailing and model railroading.

A memorial service will be held at Wilton Congregational Church on August 10th, at 11:00 a.m.
