Margaret C. Sauerhoff, 86

Margaret C. Sauerhoff, 86, of New Canaan, died July 30, 2014 at The Village at Waveny surrounded by her family. Mrs. Sauerhoff was born Aug. 12, 1927 in Columbus, Ohio to the late Rev. Charles Melvin and Mary Lovell Coulter. She married John E. Sauerhoff Jr. (Jack) in 1950 who predeceased her in 1999. They met in Washington, D.C. while she worked as the director of religious education at Emory Methodist Church. Prior to moving to New Canaan in 1966, the couple lived in Silver Spring and then Bethesda, Md., where she devoted her time to raising their five children.

Mrs. Sauerhoff retired in 1996 after 15 years as the librarian at Miller-Driscoll School in Wilton. Prior to that, she was the library aide at East Elementary School in New Canaan for 10 years.  She graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1949 and earned a master of library science degree from Southern Connecticut State College in 1978.

Mrs. Sauerhoff is survived by her five children and their spouses, John (Barbara) Sauerhoff, of New Canaan, Victor (Debbe) Sauerhoff, of Katonah, N.Y., David (Nancy) Sauerhoff, of St. Louis, Mo., Peggy Ann Sauerhoff (Porter Barber), of Grahamsville, N.Y. and Elizabeth (Robin) McCready, of Stratford, Conn. Also surviving are her grandchildren Kate, Eric, Peter, Emily, Nathaniel, Jes, Rachel, Hailey and Daniel. She was also predeceased by her sister, Mary Jo Brower in 2013.

“Margaret will be fondly remembered for her faith, love of family, generosity of spirit and the joy she found in even the simplest of things,” her family said.

A memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church of New Canaan when it reopens following the completion of its renovations in the fall.
