Leroy Calvin Jacox Jr., 92

Leroy Calvin Jacox, Jr.  (Jay), 92, of Redding, Connecticut passed away on May 23, 2014. Born February 23, 1922 in Fort Morgan, Colorado, he was the son of the late Augusta Aerney Jacox and Leroy Calvin Jacox, Sr.

He graduated from the University of Colorado, and Columbia University with a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering. During Would War II, he served as a captain in the United States Air Army Corps. He worked at Doubleday and Company after the war, as well as Airborne Instruments Laboratory, returning to Doubleday from where he retired as Vice President in 1987. For many years he was an active member of the Wilton community, serving in Kiwanis, the Ogden House Board of Trustees, and St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church. He was also a beloved member of the Davis Park-Ocean Ridge Fire Island Community where he helped establish the Davis Park Medical Association.

He was married to Shirley Agnes Solinger, his beloved wife of 57 years. Jay and Shirley enjoyed spending their leisure time at their Fire Island home and traveling extensively throughout the world, touching foot in 71 countries and six continents. In his later years, Jay began painting some of his treasured places.

He is survived by his three children, Christiane Jacox of Ridgefield, Connecticut, Susan Jacox Sturgeon of Woodinville, Washington, and Robert Jacox of Danbury, Connecticut; seven grandchildren, Rosalind Sturgeon, Katherine Ford, Joseph Sturgeon, Mattie Jacox, Jack Sturgeon, John Jacox, and Augusta Jacox; and one great-grandchild, Gunner Gizynski.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 20, 2014 at 1 pm at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 36 New Canaan Road, Wilton Connecticut, with a reception following. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Doctors without Borders, 333 7th Avenue, New York, New York 10001, or to St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Wilton, Connecticut.
