Karen Johnson Mauer, 70

Karen Alice Johnson Mauer, who lived in Wilton the past 30 years, died   April 1, 2013 at the age of 70. She was the  wife of Laurence Jay Mauer and the mother of two sons, Stephen Jay Mauer and Jonathan Scott Fron Mauer.

Born in Minneapolis, Minn., Ms. Mauer grew up in Fergus Falls in northwestern Minnesota.

While attending Grinnell College in Iowa, she met her future husband, Larry. They became engaged in the summer following her sophomore year, when they both worked in Glacier National Park in Montana, and  were married on June 15, 1963. They lived in Knoxville, where Ms. Mauer earned a bachelor of fine arts in music from the University of Tennessee in 1966 while Mr. Mauer was a graduate student in economics.

Throughout her life, Ms. Mauer maintained an intense interest in music.  For 20 years she performed with a major choral group, The Oratorio Society of Queens, and was frequently found singing with the Wilton Congregational Church choir.

Ms. Mauer loved to travel with Mr. Mauer in his job as a professor at St. John’s University. They traveled in Europe, visiting family in Norway, and with long-standing family connections in Montana, she enjoyed traveling there every year. She especially enjoyed spending time in Glacier Park at her family’s cabin on the shores of Lake McDonald, her family said.

While in Wilton, she was regularly active in the Wilton Congregational Church and in Minks-to-Sinks. In the summers she enjoyed tending her garden and during the winter, Ms. Mauer enjoyed  playing paddle tennis and socializing over dinner afterwards with her friends.

Ms. Mauer is survived by Larry, her husband of nearly 50 years, her sons and their families: Stephen and Natalie, in Missoula, Mont.;   Jonathan and Jennifer, in New Hope, Pa.; her six grandchildren, Jakob, Zachary, Madeleine, Kirsten, Eric and Sydney; and her brother Stephen Johnson of Kalispell, Mont.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 13, at 10:30, at the Wilton Congregational Church. The family asks that donations in lieu of flowers be made in her name to the Wilton Congregational Church, 70 Ridgefield Road, Wilton, 06897.
