Dorothy Jane McAllister, 96

Dorothy Jane McAllister, age 96, died Nov. 11, 2013 at her home at Cypress Court in Escondido, Calif.

She was born in Detroit, Mich. on Oct. 2, 1917, the daughter of Vera and Robert Bruce Lytle. She grew up in Detroit, received her bachelor of arts from Wayne State University and after graduation taught at East Lansing High School prior to the start of World War II. She married Arthur William McAllister at Fort Sill, Okla. on March 28, 1942. Following many military postings during the war, they settled in Albion, N.Y.

As a corporate wife, Mrs. McAllister followed her husband’s promotions, residing in Hillsboro and Lake Oswego, Ore. and then Wilton, retiring to Escondido in 1978. She was always active in the local community, serving as an officer in women’s clubs, newcomers’ clubs, as well as the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She served many terms as Republican registrar of voters in Wilton.

An avid genealogist, she was a member of Escondido Genealogical Society and traveled with her husband throughout North America and Europe to fill in the family tree. She enjoyed writing, tending orchids and playing bridge. Mrs. McAllister actively supported Cypress Court; among other activities, she served as an ambassador to help new members integrate into the community and was a member of the Red Hats.

She is survived by her three children, Arthur McAllister, Jr. and his wife Cheri McAllister of Palos Verdes, Allan McAllister of San Francisco and Linda McAllister of Bethel, Conn.; grandchildren Christopher McAllister and Karen Edmonston, as well as great-grandchildren Alex and Matthew McAllister and Marin Edmonston.

She was predeceased by her husband Arthur William McAllister, brothers  Robert Bruce, Jr. and Donald Lytle, and sister Betty Gaither.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Operation Homefront, an organization that provides assistance to families of veterans.

A memorial celebration will be held early next year.
