Writing about the Welcome to Wilton sign

This week, in which some are celebrated Indigenous Peoples Day, I am writing about the Welcome to Wilton sign in the center.

It says this area was settled in 1706. Is that true? Are we denying the existence, before that date, of the Siwanog people, and others, who walked on the same land we call Wilton?

I feel that these signs are more of an insult to these indigenous people than a feather on a football helmet.

Wouldn’t it be more accurate, and respectful to state that Colonial, or English, or European settlement began in 1706?
