Try to imagine state Sen. Rob Sampson’s surprise when he woke on June 9 and discovered that he, a Connecticut Republican, was “turning to Trump-style racism,” according to a Hartford Courant editorial. This was because of an amendment he sponsored to keep “divisive concepts,” including the idea that “the state of Connecticut or the United States of America is fundamentally racist or sexist,” out of K-12 classrooms.
With this measure, “the Republicans showed their hand,” the Courant wrote. In other words, Republicans are race-baiters like President Donald Trump, owing largely to their approval of this amendment, which borrowed from an executive order from Trump and a similar proposal in liberal Rhode Island.
