Greenhouse gardening

With Mother’s Day rapidly approaching, the Wilton Garden Club is gearing up, once again, to host its annual plant sale. For members, this means busy mornings spent in the club’s greenhouse at Comstock Community Center on School Road.

This fully automated facility was built in 1986 through funds raised almost exclusively from club members and friends.  Since then, it has served as a very special learning center and popular gathering spot for the club’s members. It is an active and dynamic place where members sow seeds, experiment with unfamiliar plants, learn propagation techniques, and grow most of the plants used to fill the numerous pots, baskets and containers sold at the club’s annual Mother’s Day Plant Sale.

During the winter, the greenhouse becomes a refuge for both the delicate plants and the club’s members, who are greeted with a welcome blast of warm air upon entering. Members meet there three mornings a week from September through early May to nurture every plant and ensure their survival through the colder months. As the plants mature, a heady perfume fills the greenhouse as the florals begin to blossom. This 800-square-foot glass-enclosed space, through the efforts of its tireless caretakers, becomes a virtual paradise, sumptuous in its floral array.

In a departure from years past, the renovation at the Comstock Community Center this year caused the greenhouse to shut down through the end of February. Undaunted, the club’s volunteers quickly went to work the moment they were allowed back in to clean, scrub and sweep away the construction debris. Subsequent efforts concentrated on acquiring and caring for new plants. Donated “mother” plants were cut and divided in order to propagate many “baby” plants. Hundreds of seeds were planted and are being carefully tended. Already the greenhouse is beginning to look as resplendent as usual, and members are eagerly anticipating the moment when their “babies” are mature enough to plant in their eventual pots, baskets and containers.

This year marks the club’s 77th annual Mother’s Day Plant Sale, which will be held rain or shine on Wilton’s Town Green on Friday, May 6, from noon to 6, and Saturday, May 7, from 9 to noon. In addition, the club will host a Greenhouse Sale at Comstock Community Center on Wednesday, May 4, from 9:30 until 1:30. This “early bird” sale will offer a wide selection of decorative flower baskets, patio containers, hanging flower baskets, herb containers and terrariums.
