Kasena Karmel, former longtime resident of Mamaroneck, passed away on January 30, 2016 at the age of 99. Beloved wife of the late Morton. Loving mother of Jane Karmel and Mary (Chuck) Cunningham of Wilton, CT. Adoring grandmother of Charlie and Greg. Beloved Aunt Kasey to her niece, nephews, and their children.

The daughter of Nathan and Lena (Lauton) Toub, Kasena grew up with her four siblings in Bayonne, NJ. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Education and a Master’s Degree in English Literature from NYU. After graduating from college she moved into Manhattan and worked at WNYC Radio, and she interned at the United Nations in its early days. She subsequently taught school to underprivileged children in New York and sang in the chorus of the Metropolitan Opera, as well as performing with smaller opera repertory companies.

In 1952 Kasena married Morton Karmel and they moved to Mamaroneck, NY, where she lived for 52 years. Kay was an avid gardener and past president of the Mamaroneck Garden Club, and longtime member of the Larchmont Temple where she sang in the choir. In her later years she volunteered at nursing homes, singing as part of a traveling chorus group, and also taught flower arranging to nursing home residents as therapy. In addition she recorded audio books for the blind.

Kasena loved music, enjoyed reading, and wrote poetry as well as writing a series of articles on plants of the Bible. She was known for her wonderful sense of humor, and her unparalleled generosity and kind heartedness. She will be lovingly remembered by all who knew her.

Funeral service will be held at the Larchmont Temple on Friday, February 5, at 11 a.m.

Entombment at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY.

Reception at the Osborn in Rye, NY at 2:30 p.m.
