John “Jack” Farmakis died Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016. His family said he touched many lives through his love of family, friends, sports, travel, work and many community-based activities.

He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on Feb. 27, 1931. Upon graduation from Episcopal Academy, Jack attended University of Pennsylvania, graduating with a business degree in 1953. He then served a brief period of time in the U.S. Army.

Jack met his wife, Elizabeth “Betsy” Ann Smith during his college days. They raised their three children in both Norwalk and New Canaan, Conn.

He was deeply involved with the Kiwanis Club of New Canaan and the A Better Chance (ABC) program in New Canaan to help support the educational development of young adults.

He started his career in media sales with several leading agriculture publications, including Farm Journal magazine. An entrepreneur at heart, he started J.L. Farmakis, Inc. in 1974 to represent local agricultural media properties and today, this firm is still one of the leading independent ad sales firms in the US.

He is survived by his three children, John L. Farmakis, Jr., Deborah L. Buckley and William D Farmakis, of Wilton, and their families and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of New Canaan, CT on Friday, March 11 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family recommends donations to the following: Kiwanis Club of New Canaan, P.O.
