Obituary: Joan Starr, 87

Joan Augspurger Starr, “community servant,” loving mother and grandmother, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Nov. 5, 2016.

Born in Los Angeles on Feb. 15, 1929, she was the daughter of Elsie and Robert Augspurger. She attended and graduated from The Principia School and UCLA. She married Robert Starr, who predeceased her in 1997, and moved to New Canaan to raise their family. They lived in New Canaan for 35 years before residing in Wilton.

Surviving are sons David and his wife Joy (of Concord, N.H.), Richard and his wife Cindy (of Seaford, Del.), Jeffrey and his wife Orlyna (of Norwalk, Conn.) and daughter Wendy (of Norwalk); as well as six grandsons, Justin, Kyle, Matthew, Gregory, Jeffrey, Jr., and Andrew; whose lives and accomplishments were always of great joy to her. Also surviving is her brother, Quentin Augspurger, of Scottsdale, Ariz.

While at UCLA she joined and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She was involved with P.E.O. since 1994, and held many positions as well as president from 2014 to 2016. In 1994, she received the AAUW Woman of the Year Award

She actively participated in several community organizations — Wilton Historical Society, Wilton Commons (senior housing), Stay at Home in Wilton and Schoolhouse Apartments (senior housing in New Canaan). After moving to Wilton, Joan and Bob continued to attend the United Methodist Church of New Canaan. At the church she was involved in numerous commissions since the early 1990s including Midnight Run, missions co-chair, Membership & Evangelism, Board of Trustees, and Lay Leaders. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Dec. 10, at 11 a.m., at the United Methodist Church of New Canaan followed by a reception. The family will have a private interment at Lakeview Cemetery.
