Dr. Ho-Kang Liu, known by friends as HK, 83, of Scotia, N.Y., died Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2015 in Norwalk (CT) Hospital in surrounded by his loving family.

HK was born in Nanking, China, the son Chung-Fu and Yung-Wha Liu. He came to the United States in 1952 and graduated from Auburn University, BSME in 1955. He received an SMME degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1957. He also received his doctorate from Washington University in St. Louis in 1965. In college, HK was elected as a member of the Tau Beta Pi, Pi Mu Epsilon and Pi Tau Sigma honorary societies.

HK married Theresa (Terry) L. Wu on May 5, 1962 in Newark, N.J. He worked for the Monsanto Chemical Company 1957 to 1965. From 1965 to 1995, he resided in Scotia (until 2011) and worked in various capacities at the General Electric Company, Research and Development Center in Niskayuna, N.Y. From 1965 to 1970, HK served as a mechanical engineer. He was Unit Manager of the Solid Mechanics Unit from 1970 to 1972. In 1972, he was promoted to Technical Administrator of the Mechanical Laboratory. From 1975 until he retired in 1995, he was the Laboratory Manager of the Mechanical Engineering Laboratory.

HK and Terry had four children and 10 grandchildren. HK was a loving and dedicated husband, father and grandfather. Together with Terry, they promoted the values of education, hard work, discipline, a tight-knit family and good food. Although HK has left this physical world, the teaching, caring, compassion for others and the memories will live on through his family and all those whose lives he has touched.

He was predeceased by his son Thomas C. Liu, his parents Chung-Fu and Yung-Wha Liu and siblings David Liu and Wenying Cheng.

Surviving Dr. Liu are his wife, Terry, three children and 10 grandchildren: his son Timothy and his wife Hope Liu of Austin, Texas, and children Nicholas and Lindsey, daughter-in-law Mary Jane Liu of Westport, Conn., and children Adam, Aaron and Amy, daughter Jennifer and her husband Brian Ward of Wilton, Conn., and their children Alec, Katie and Eliza, and daughter Lisa and her husband Jay DesMarteau of Westport, Conn., and their children Jake and Elle, and many nieces and nephews.

The family will conduct a private memorial for HK. They are planning a celebration of his life with family and friends at a future date.
