Frederick W. Rhines, died Oct. 6, 2016, at age 74 in San Antonio, where he had moved with his wife Betsy in 2015. Born in Detroit, he earned a B.A. from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, followed by an M.B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley. The Rhines family lived in Wilton for 44 years.

Fred had a long career as an advertising executive in New York City. He worked for a number of top agencies, including Young & Rubicam and McCann Erickson. He was President of the U.S. branch of Publicis, a French agency, from 1985 until 1994. His major clients included Revlon, Lancome and Fujitsu and he enjoyed working with some of the industry’s top photographers and writers.  After retiring from advertising, Fred and Betsy owned a staffing service in Danbury, Conn.

Fred loved golf, swimming in the Caribbean, music, the theater and cycling. He and his wife met some of their dearest friends on the 18 cycling trips they took to various parts of Europe, Argentina, New Zealand and South Africa. Fred supported Guiding Eyes for the Blind in Yorktown Heights, N.Y., by socializing future guide dog puppies and working at the annual golf tournament for blind golfers.

In addition to Betsy, Fred is survived by two daughters, Gretchen Rhines Cheney of Washington, D.C., and Cynthia Rhines of Austin; two grandchildren, Ryan Peter Cheney and Ella Watson Cheney; and his son-in-law, Scott Cheney.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in Fred’s memory to Guiding Eyes for the Blind (guidingeyes.org) or the San Antonio Food Bank (safoodbank.org).  Condolences may be sent to the Rhines family at theangelusfuneralhome.com.
