Audrey Brauneck Cross of Norwalk, formerly of Manchester and Wilton, Conn., died Aug. 12, 2016 in Norwalk.

She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Samuel S. Cross, sisters Dorothy Vitaliano and Doris DeHuff and grandchildren Subhadra and William. She was a devoted mother to her son Stephen and his wife Sharon, daughter Lauren, son Robert, daughter Wendy and her partner Kim, stepson Edward and his wife Kathie. She leaves behind five grandchildren, Wendy, Matthew, Eddie, Brian and Kelly and six great-grandchildren, Justin, Tyler, Caiden, Owen, Samuel and James.

Cross was born in New York City on July 12, 1921 to William and Adele Brauneck. She was a graduate of the Katharine Gibbs School in New York City. She went to work for Time, Inc. at Rockefeller Center before marrying her husband Sam and moving to Wilton to raise her family. She was a patron of the arts and a long-standing member of the Metropolitan Opera House and Yale Repertory Theatre. She loved classical music and literature and never encountered a New York Times crossword puzzle she couldn’t handily vanquish with the stroke of her pen.

Cross was a lifelong animal lover and regular contributor to local and national rescue organizations. She was also an avid New York City sports fan, although she harbored an endearment for the Boston Red Sox.

“Audrey was blessed throughout her life with a quick wit, wry sense of humor and a mind as sharp as a tack,” her family said. “Above all else, Audrey loved her family with a kind and generous heart.”

A private family service will be held on Friday, Aug. 19, at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that tax-deductible donations be made in Audrey’s memory to WASA (Westport Animal Shelter Advocates), www.westportwasa.org, 1 Tower Ridge, Westport, CT 06880.
