Dorothy Marie Hutchinson, née Swinnerton, born on May 10, 1922 in Stamford, died on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013 at Norwalk Hospital of complications of a fall last Christmas. She was surrounded by her grown children.

Beginning in 1968, Mrs. Hutchinson worked for many years as an executive secretary, first for the special education office of the New Canaan public schools and then for the first selectman of New Canaan. She reluctantly retired at the age of 82. She was noted, among her many accomplishments, for her expert organization of New Canaan's iconic traditional Memorial Day Parade.

She “was known for her New England work ethic, strength of character and the sheer breadth and depth of activity on behalf of her family members and her communities,” her family said. “She was an organizer, a leader and a powerhouse. Her children and grandchildren are proud to resemble her even though, they say, matching her is surely out of their reach.”

After her retirement, Mrs. Hutchinson was an enthusiastic member of The Daughters of the American Revolution, The Hannah Benedict Chapter of New Canaan.

Mrs. Hutchinson is survived by one of her five siblings, Joan Lewis of Greenwich; and her six grown children, Nancy Hutchinson Erdmann of Cambridge, Mass.; Robert E. Hutchinson of Norwalk; Carol M. Hutchinson of Wellesley, Mass.; David C. Hutchinson of Ketchum, Idaho; Alan J. Hutchinson of Chicago, Ill.; and Glenn A. Hutchinson of Wilton.

She was predeceased by her husband, Edwin Charles Hutchinson, to whom she was married for 35 years.

The family will receive friends on Friday, Oct. 25, from 5-8 p.m., at Hoyt Funeral Home in New Canaan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Oct. 26, at 10 a.m. at St. Aloysius Church. Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Mrs. Hutchinson’s memory can be made to Family 4th, c/o Town of New Canaan, 77 Main St., New Canaan, CT 06840.
