A nascent Safe Rides program is under way in Wilton.

Mike Safko and his daughter Lauren, a junior at Wilton High School, addressed the Board of Selectmen Monday evening, May 6, introducing their effort to revive the ride-sharing program that has not existed successfully in Wilton since the 1980s.

“This is very preliminary,” Mr. Safko told The Bulletin. He hopes to get a program under way for the 2013-14 school year.

The mission of Safe Rides, which is an independent, nationwide program, is to provide free rides to young people who lack transportation either because they are impaired or due to other circumstances.

The selectmen were supportive in their comments but suggested Mr. Safko present the issue to a number of town officials, including Superintendent of Schools Gary Richards, Social Services Director Cathy Pierce, and others.

Mr. Safko is working to put together a board of directors which, in late August, will work to recruit volunteers.
