It’s official. The first day of school for Wilton public school students next fall will be Tuesday, Sept. 6.

This comes after the Board of Education voted to approve a revised school calendar for the 2016-17 school year during its Jan. 28 meeting.

Superintendent Kevin Smith first presented the revised calendar to the board back in December after the Miller-Driscoll Building Committee put in a request to change the start date in order to “provide the renovation project as much time this summer as possible to work on while the kids aren’t in the building.”

The last day of school next year will be June 15, and other dates have been moved around in an effort to “economize around holidays and other scheduled days off,” creating “an unusual pattern” in the month of October, said Smith.

“If you look at the second week [of October], the 10th is Columbus Day. That’s a holiday for a number of our employees per contract, so we would be closed that day,” Smith said during the education board’s Dec. 17 meeting.

With a professional learning day on Oct. 11 and Yom Kippur on Oct. 12, students will have a very long weekend the second week of October.

The revised calendar includes a long weekend in November as well, with a professional learning day on Nov. 7 and Election Day on Nov. 8.

  • Dec. 26-Jan. 1: Holiday recess.
