Wilton ranked 7th best high school in Connecticut
Wilton High School is the seventh best high school in the state of Connecticut, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2016 Best High Schools rankings.
Last year, Wilton High School ranked ninth on the list.
According to the report, Connecticut — which has 131 school districts, 193 high schools, 13,219 full-time teachers and 167,323 enrolled students — has 11 gold medal schools, 37 silver medal schools and 13 bronze medal schools this year.
Since Wilton High School was awarded a national gold medal, the school was eligible for a state ranking.
The following academic indicators are used to determine schools’ rankings:
- Student/teacher ratio.
- Reading proficiency.
- Mathematics proficiency.
- College readiness index.
According to the report, Wilton High School has 1,318 students, 95 full-time teachers, and a minority enrollment of 12%, and 2% of its students are economically disadvantaged. Wilton High School has a 14-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio — larger than the 12-to-1 state average.
U.S. News calculated the following averages based on Wilton student performance on state exit exams and internationally available exams on college-level course work, such as AP exams:
- Percent of students at least proficient in reading: 99%.
- Percent of students proficient in math: 97%.
- College readiness index: 60.2.
College readiness is based on the percentage of 12th graders who were tested on and passed AP exams. The maximum college readiness index value is 100.
According to the report, 64% of Wilton 12th graders took AP tests and 59% of them passed.

- Weston High School — No. 4.
- Ridgefield High School — No. 5.
- Greenwich High School — No. 10.
- Darien High School — No. 11.
- Staples High School (Westport) — No. 14.
- Joel Barlow High School (Redding) — No. 15.
- Fairfield Ludlowe High School — No. 16.
- New Canaan High School — No. 17.
- Fairfield Warde High School — No. 18.
The No. 1 best school in Connecticut this year was the Connecticut International Baccalaureate Academy in East Hartford, which also took the top spot last year.
Wilton High School was ranked the 368th best school in the nation, a fall from its 356th ranking last year. The high school also fell in its STEM ranking — from 97th last year to 196th this year.
