Student historians leave their mark on History Day
Five Wilton High School historians have been selected to compete at the 2015 National History Day Contest, taking place June 14-18 at the University of Maryland in College Park, Md.
After their J. Alden Weir: Painting a Legacy project won second place at the Connecticut History Day Fairfield Regional Contest on Saturday, March 21, Wilton High School History Club students Lizzy Lynch, Mary Lynch, Isabel Saltzman, Claire Graham, and Hana Previte will go on to represent Connecticut and the Wilton community at the national competition.
Throughout the school year, the students have been independently working on their project with guidance and support from their teacher and history club adviser, Kenneth Dunaj.
For the regional contest, students were required to develop an inquiry project that exemplified the theme of Leadership and Legacy.
Unlike many of their peers from other high schools, the Wilton students did not have the opportunity to work on their projects in their daily history classes.
The Wilton History Club students completed their work outside of the normal school day while juggling rigorous class loads and sports, not to mention the junior prom.
The Wilton students competed against other high school students who were previously awarded top honors at the regional Connecticut History Day contests.
The Wilton High School students demonstrated their mastery of critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills at the state contest.
History Day in Connecticut is led by Connecticut’s Old State House, with support from the Connecticut Historical Society, the Connecticut League of History Organizations and Connecticut Humanities’ ConnecticutHistory.org website. Major funding is provided by Connecticut Humanities.
Students were evaluated by volunteer judges, including social studies teachers from local school districts, college professors, the Connecticut state historian, and the newly confirmed Connecticut commissioner of education.
