Students in Lauren Geluso’s second grade class at Miller-Driscoll recently worked together to create birthday bags and donate them to critically ill children and their families through the New York-based organization Friends of Karen.

After learning that “it is up to us to make the world a better place by spreading love and kindness” during their Responsible Citizenship unit in social studies, Geluso said, she and her students brainstormed “many ways to spread love and kindness.”

Geluso said her class decided that one way they could make the world better is by donating to “a great local organization” like Friends of Karen.

The second graders participated in the organization’s Birthday Bag Project, which involves collecting boxes of cake mix, cans of frosting, individually packaged party plates and napkins, and boxes of birthday candles and packaging them into a cello bag tied with a ribbon.
