Scores of Wilton students in spring ballet
Wilton Dance Studio’s Spring Shows will feature more than 250 student dancers, including 96 from Wilton. There will be three performances on Sunday, June 2, at the Clune Center at Wilton High School.
Fourteen dancers from Wilton will receive recognition for their participation over five, 10 and 15 years with the studio. Celebrating 10 years with the studio are: Lizzie MacDonald, Haley MacDonald and Katie Jankowski.
Younger dancers perform in ‘Grandma’s Attic” at 11 a.m. The classic comic ballet “Coppélia” is featured during the 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. shows. The two afternoon performances also showcase “All that Jazz,” a review-style show including modern, tap, hip-hop and other styles of dance, reflecting the diversity of dance study provided by the studio.
Dancers up to age six participate in “Grandma’s Attic,” which allows each class to shine in its own routine and costume, but without requiring dancers, or the audience, to stay for an extended period of time.
“We love providing a performance experience to our younger dancers that allows them to experience the big stage without too much pressure, It’s important to their development of confidence and also joy in sharing their art,” said Brenda Froehlich, owner and artistic director of the studio.
For older dancers, the show begins with bringing to life a story-focused ballet, allowing them to learn to tell a story through movement and expression. This year, ballet students from age seven through high school seniors will present “Coppélia,” a fanciful story tell of an inventor, Dr. Coppélius, who creates a life-like doll so lovely that the local heartthrob, Franz, decides to leave his fiancée Swanhilda. Mayhem and dancing ensue, with beautiful costumes and professional sets from J. Galt Designs, a local theatrical backdrop company.
The afternoon show second act, “All That Jazz,” is a variety show, with each class presenting a number. Older students create their own choreography.
