Seventh grader Lukas Koutsoukos has been crowned the winner of Middlebrook School’s Geography Bee for the second year in a row.

Lukas and eight other students participated in the schoolwide competition, moderated by social studies teacher John Priest, on Wednesday, Jan, 24. They answered questions that tested their knowledge of geography, as well as sociological and historical concepts.

After five rounds of questions, Lukas and sixth grader Ryan Smith went head-to-head in the championship round. Lukas emerged as champion and now advances to qualify for the state competition in April at Central Connecticut State University.

Middlebrook’s annual Geo Bee is part of the National Geographic Society’s annual National Geographic Bee competition where fourth through eighth graders compete for college scholarships and the title of National Geographic Bee Champion.

School champions will be notified if they qualify for state competitions by March 2.

State Geo Bee winners get to compete in the National Championship at National Geographic Society Headquarters in Washington, D.C., in May.
