Middlebrook seventh grader Lukas Koutsoukos was crowned the national champion in the seventh grade division of the National History Bee’s Citizenship Bee in Atlanta earlier this month.

The Citizenship Bee tests students’ knowledge of American history, geography, civics and culture. Lukas was the highest scorer in his division, with 18 points in the first round and 14 in the second.

Lukas also participated in the U.S. Academic Bee & Bowl in Atlanta, June 1-2. The Academic Bee & Bowl is a buzzer-based academic quiz competition for individual middle and elementary school students, consisting of four events — the U.S. Academic Bee, U.S. Academic Bowl, National Science Bee, and National Humanities Bee.

At this year’s competition, Lukas named a finalist in the Humanities Bee and ranked seventh in the Geography Olympiad. Last year, Lukas was named national champion in both the battery exam and geography exam and placed fourth in the Humanities Bee, Science Bee and Geography Bee, and fifth in the Academic Bee.
