Wilton Police warn residents of kidnapping phone scams

Police are warning residents they have seen an increase in fake kidnapping phone reports in Wilton and its surrounding towns.

These scams entail a phone call being received from a person who claims to have taken a loved one hostage. The person on the phone demands a ransom for their release, Lt. Don Wakeman said Tuesday, and claims they have been knocked unconscious after being hit by a gun.

“They will often call with some specific information or knowledge of the person,” Lt. Wakeman said. “They’ll pick up information after scanning Facebook and other social media to drop specific names.”

Because these scammers use Go Phones and are often outside of the U.S., there is little police can do to catch them. However, police encourage residents to be vigilant and to contact police to report any suspicious phone calls.
