Increase in accidents, DUIs and citations this July 4th weekend
Connecticut State Police responded to 315 motor vehicle accidents, arrested 39 intoxicated drivers, and issued 1,227 speeding tickets and 2,913 tickets for other hazardous moving violations this Fourth of July weekend, July 1-4.
Forty-five of the accidents were with injuries, and there were two fatalities. On Sunday, July 3, a 69-year-old Trumbull woman died after a six-car accident on I-95 in East Haven and a 20-year-old man was struck and killed while walking on the I-95 in Westbrook.
Connecticut State Police ramped up enforcement this holiday weekend and concentrated their efforts on aggressive, reckless, distracted, speeding and intoxicated drivers this holiday weekend with the use of laser units and both marked and unmarked patrol cars.
Troop G, which covers lower Fairfield County, had roving patrols on Interstate 95 and Routes 8, 15 and 25 on July 1, 2 and 4.
Last Fourth of July weekend, state police arrested 33 intoxicated drivers, investigated 170 motor vehicle crashes — 48 with injury and two fatalities, issued 859 speeding tickets and 2,461 tickets for other hazardous moving violations.
Between Saturday, July 1 and Monday, July 4, Wilton police responded to six motor vehicle accidents, two of which were with injuries.
