Due to high winds, a tree fell on power lines near 172 Westport Road on Tuesday evening, Feb. 16, pulling down the lines and causing an electrical fire in the roadway. As a result, that part of Westport Road was closed for three hours, and 299 Eversource customers lost power.

According to police, two patrol and two fire units responded to the area around 5:30 p.m. There was a “small” fire in the road near the downed lines, Deputy Fire Chief Mark Amatrudo said. “The fire was incidental,” he added.

Upon request of the fire department, Wilton CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) sent 14 members to assist with the road closure, closing it from Dudley Road to Route 53.

Eversource sent a crew to cut the power and remove the tree. Normal travel on Westport Road resumed at 9 p.m., but the Eversource crew remained for another three and a-half hours to repair the damaged power lines.

According an Eversource spokesperson, power for the 299 homes was restored at 1:31 a.m., Feb. 17.

“With the high winds yesterday, we saw this [type of incident] throughout our service territory,” the spokesperson said. “Gusts got up to 50 mph in some areas.”
