Belden Hill Road was closed for about eight hours Tuesday night, Sept. 19, after a one-car accident snapped a telephone pole, bringing down primary electric lines that caused a small fire when they hit the ground. According to police, the car slid off the road shortly after 6 between Wolfpit Road and Drum Hill Road, which is where the road closure occurred.

Wilton firefighters responded to the scene where they put out the fire. The car was about 10 feet from the flames, fire Capt. Kevin Czarnecki said, and the driver was able to get out uninjured.

An Eversource crew arrived and turned the power off, but had to wait for a crew from the telephone company to replace the pole, then Eversource  energized the wires.

The Eversource outage map showed there were 207 customers without power.

The driver was cited for failure to drive in the proper lane, driving with a suspended license and failure to turn in a suspended license.
