Gundell to teach songwriting workshop

Wilton’s own Emmy Award-winning musician Andy “A.J.” Gundell will teach songwriting at the recently founded Fairfield County Writers’ Studio in Westport starting April 23.

Gundell, whose 13 Emmys include three for Outstanding Original Song, will lead a weekly Saturday songwriting workshop called “Working Title: Write a Winning Song.”

In seven sessions, step-by-step, Gundell will take adult and teen students through the process of writing and selling a modern pop song. Adults will attend the morning session, while teens will have their session in the afternoon.

“It doesn’t matter whether lyrics or chord progressions are their strength; Gundell will meet students where they are, and over the weeks, will help them learn to write great hooks, choruses, verses and bridges, to arrive at a finished work,” a press release said.

But Gundell and his students won’t just be working together on pieces; they’ll also explore the commercial side of music-making, covering a range of topics from recording demos on digital workstations to pitching songs to recording artists or to film and TV.

Basic instrumental skill for accompaniment is desirable, but not required. Each seven-week workshop culminates in a showcase for family and friends that highlights each student’s new song.

The price of the workshop is $295 per person. Adult classes are Saturdays from 10 to noon, teens are 1 to 3 p.m. To register, call 203-374-8343 or email
