At ceremonies in Dahlgren Hall at the United States Naval Academy on June 10, Capt. Joseph R. Brenner Jr., USN, retired from active duty and his assignment on the faculty of the Department of Oceanography.

A graduate of the academy he served 28 years with tours in Rota, Spain, Yokosuka, Japan and a deployment to the Arabian Gulf. He taught at the Navy's Surface Warfare Officers' School, was director of operations at the METOC Center in San Diego, commanded the Strike Group Oceanography Team, and was assigned to the Oceanographer of the Navy staff, and the Pentagon. He was the deputy director of the Navy's Task Force Climate Change, before his final academic position.

Brenner is also a graduate of Wilton High School.
