Food served in Wilton\u2019s public schools was ranked the fifth best in Connecticut in according to Niche.com\u2019s 2016 Districts with the Best Food in Connecticut ranking. Each year, Niche ranks more than 100,000 public and private schools based on \u201cdozens of statistics and 27 million opinions from 300,000 students and parents,\u201d according to its website, and creates \u201cbest of\u201d lists for schools and districts across the country. Niche\u2019s Connecticut school food ranking was based on parent and student opinions about the quality and variety of food served in the districts (80%) and expense per student \u2014 total expenses divided by the total number of students (20%). The Wilton Public School District received a 3.8 out of 5 on the parent and student surveys and has a $20,694 per student expense, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. With a 4 out of 5 survey score and $20,702 per student expense, New Canaan School District ranked No. 1 on the list, followed by Regional School District No. 13 in Middlefield, the Weston School District and Westport School District. Chartwells is the food service provider of Wilton, Westport and Weston Public Schools, while New Canaan has a self-operating food service called the New Canaan Public Schools Food Service, which is led by Culinary Institute of America and Institute of Integrative Nutrition graduate Bruce Gluck.
