Wilton High School presents SUPERHEROES

The stories of Marvel and DC Comics superheroes will be taking the stage of the Clune Center when the Wilton High School senior class presents this year’s senior show, Superheroes, the evening of Thursday, Feb. 4.

The show’s director, Mary Jo Duffy, said she came across the funny and fast-paced comedic show by Ian McWethy after much research and turned it into a musical.

With a unique twist of comedic and musical elements and humorous scenes and characters, Wilton High School’s production explores how superheroes like Superman and the Incredible Hulk deal with life in street clothes and manage their hectic and sometimes uneventful lives.

As with every senior show at the high school, all seniors are welcome to join the cast and none are turned away, making for a mixed group of students — some with much experience in the performing arts and many with none at all.

“The magic of this show for me is that it provides the senior class an opportunity to bond together doing something which, for many of the students, is completely out of their comfort zone,” said Duffy.

During rehearsals for the big group numbers, she said, the “theater kids take the lead and spirit the sports kids through their dance steps, punch lines, and high notes.”

Although organizing rehearsals can be challenging due to students’ busy schedules, which include extracurricular activities, college applications and midterms, said Duffy, “there is a lot of laughter” once they’re all together, “and it is heartwarming to see.”

“This is an experience that [the seniors] can remember as they go on their many different paths and hopefully will look back on with fondness and maybe a lump in their throats,” said Duffy.

In addition to putting in rehearsal time, the students are required to complete at least five hours of “tech,” which involves working with stage designer Christian Planton to paint and construct set pieces, and producer Marty Kozlowski, who has been accumulating respective attire for heroes and fans alike.

Superheroes premieres Thursday, Feb. 4, at 7:30 p.m. at the Wilton High School Clune Center, 395 Danbury Road, with additional performances on Friday, Feb. 5, at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 6, at 5 p.m.

Tickets, which are available at the door, are $10 for students and $12 for adults.
